"Upon Further Review"

2010 Season Week 12 Clips

Onside kick recovery and IR     Instant replay was employed to determine if an onside kick was illegally touched by Team A (the kicker).  While the videos were insufficient to overrule the call on the field (not touched), they certainly did not seem sufficient to "confirm" the call either.  Perhaps the IR crew had access to better videos.

Sideline Misconduct   All persons in the team area are subject to the rules (1-1-6).  Since the illegal action here took place when the ball was dead, sideline interference does not apply. (9-1-5-a, 9-1-6)   Persons in the team area can be charged with personal fouls and with unsportsmanlike conduct.

"Get Away" Signal  Does not matter who gives the "get away" signal, the signal prevents all Team B players from advancing with the kick.  (6-5-2) (AR 6-5-3-VI) This particular coach is likely very familiar with the fair catch rules after his team's experience in 2007 when they were incorrectly permitted to advance the ball after an invalid fair catch signal, resulting in a TD.  He delivers a quick lesson to his player following the play.

Unsportsmanlike Conduct and the Coach    Some coaches have realized the severe disadvantage their teams are at when they must kickoff from the 15 instead of the 30 and are "mentoring" their players when they commit acts that lead to this situation.

Not Ineligible Downfield   When judging on ineligibles downfield on legal forward pass we must know when the pass was thrown.  (7-3-10) The wording of  the rule may confuse some into thinking the linemen must remain less than 3 yards downfield until the pass crosses the NZ or is touched.  As soon as the pass is released, ineligibles can legally be downfield.

KO Out of Bounds and a Dead Ball Foul  Any KO out of bounds that goes less than 34 yards before going out of bounds should see a penalty of 5 yards from the out of bounds spot.  In this play, it appears that 5 yards was not awarded and the 15 yards was simply added from the out of bounds spot (A-44) as ball was next snapped at the A-29.  The 5 yards for the KO out of bounds would have put the ball at the A-39 and the 15 yards for the dead ball foul would have moved it to the A-24.

Batting from Out of Bounds     An airborne player bats the ball, loose from a fumble, from out of bounds.  If he had been touching ground, ball would have been declared dead.   (4-2-3-a) (4-2-1-a) The only question here is whether or not the bat was forward which would have been legal.  Appears it was not forward, so no foul.  Many will recall a Peach Bowl play several years ago where a forward pass was batted by a player in the air over the out of bounds area.  That was a forward pass so the bat was legal.  Batting other loose balls forward is a foul.    (9-4-1)

Blocking Below the Waist by a RB     Another example of blocking below the waist incorrectly called on a running back who was inside the tackle box and not in motion at the snap. (9-1-2-e)  A42 may have been guilty of tripping, but not for an illegal block below the waist.

Block Below the Waist or Clip ?     Either way, this is a good pickup by the H.  Fouling player is at the top of the screen.  (No, Mr. Announcer, it was not a "chop block")

Late Hit    Good pickup for the deliberate late hit at the bottom of  the screen.  The nature of this hit makes it fall into the category of an offense that might be deemed flagrant and therefore call for an ejection.

High Hit 1      High Hit 2      High Hit 3      There continues to be emphasis placed on eliminating high hits from the game.  While the speed of the game makes it difficult at times to rule with absolute certainty whether or not the hit was illegal, the guidance is to err on the side of making them illegal hits when in question.

Illegal Motion or False Start     If the kicker starts his motion before the snap he is guilty of a false start (dead ball foul) just as would be any other back.  Illegal motion would be if he was moving forward as  the ball was snapped (live ball foul).

"Unabated" ?     Is this the kind of act that AR 7-1-5-III is designed to address?  Appears the ball was snapped as the defender was just in the NZ.
